What is the difference between Ionic Zinc and Ionic Zinc XS?Updated 2 months ago

When customers ask about the difference between Metabolics Ionic Zinc and Ionic Zinc XS, the main distinctions are the strength of zinc per serving and how finely each product allows intake to be adjusted.

Product overview

Both Ionic Zinc and Ionic Zinc XS are liquid zinc food supplements that deliver zinc in ionic form for efficient uptake in the intestine. They are manufactured by Metabolics in the UK, are suitable for vegans and vegetarians, and contain no unnecessary binders, fillers or flavourings.

Ingredients

Ionic Zinc

  • Form: Liquid ionic zinc in purified water.

  • Source of zinc: A soluble zinc salt providing elemental zinc in ionic form.

  • Free from: Common allergens, artificial colours, flavours and unnecessary additives.

Ionic Zinc XS

  • Form: Liquid ionic zinc in purified water.

  • Source of zinc: Zinc chloride providing elemental zinc in ionic form.

  • Free from: Common allergens, artificial colours, flavours and unnecessary additives.

Both products are designed to be as simple and “clean label” as possible, using minimal ingredients to support tolerability and practitioner-style dosing.

Strength and zinc content

Ionic Zinc (standard)

  • Zinc per 10 drops: 156 micrograms (0.156 mg) elemental zinc.

  • Percentage of adult NRV: Around 2% of the adult Nutrient Reference Value (NRV) for zinc, which is 10 mg per day.

This is a very low-strength option that is ideal where a tiny, gradual introduction of zinc is preferred or where other dietary or supplemental sources of zinc are already in use.

Ionic Zinc XS (extra strength)

  • Zinc per 10 drops: 1.1 mg elemental zinc.

  • Percentage of adult NRV: Around 11% of the adult NRV for zinc.

This is still a relatively low dose compared with many capsule products but offers a higher zinc content per 10 drops than standard Ionic Zinc, giving a modest “extra strength” option while remaining very adjustable.

How they are typically used

When Ionic Zinc may be chosen

Ionic Zinc is often selected when:

  • Very small, finely titrated amounts of zinc are needed.

  • Intake needs to be built up slowly over time.

  • The person is already obtaining zinc from diet, a multivitamin or other targeted zinc products and only a small “top up” is desired.

When Ionic Zinc XS may be chosen

Ionic Zinc XS is often selected when:

  • A slightly higher but still modest zinc dose is appropriate.

  • A practitioner wants more zinc per 10 drops without moving to high-dose capsule products.

  • The customer still values the flexibility of a liquid, ionic format to adjust intake as needed.

In all cases, dosing should follow the product label and any advice provided by a suitably qualified health professional.

Important safety and regulatory guidance

  • The generally recognised safe upper limit for total zinc intake in adults (from diet plus supplements combined) is 40 mg per day.

  • Long-term intakes above 25 mg per day may interfere with copper absorption and could lead to issues such as low copper status or anaemia.

  • Customers should not exceed the recommended dose on the label and should take into account all other zinc sources (diet, multivitamins and other zinc supplements).

  • Metabolics, in line with UK and EU regulatory guidance, does not provide individual medical advice; customers with underlying health conditions, those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or anyone taking prescription medication should speak to a healthcare practitioner before introducing or changing supplements.

Not a substitute for medical advice

Metabolics products are food supplements and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Customer communications must not make medicinal claims or suggest that zinc will treat specific medical conditions; instead, focus on zinc’s recognised roles in normal immune function, cognitive function, skin, hair and nails, and metabolism, as allowed under applicable nutrition and health claim regulations.

Still unsure which zinc is right for you?

If a customer is uncertain whether Ionic Zinc or Ionic Zinc XS is more appropriate, the safest approach is to:

  • Encourage them to review their total daily zinc intake (including food and other supplements).

  • Suggest they discuss their choice and dosage with a qualified healthcare practitioner, especially if they have specific health concerns or complex medication regimens.

Metabolics also offers a free telephone consultation service with a trained nutritional therapist, which can help customers understand how different products fit into their overall nutritional intake.
